Ingredients

  • Ground beef weighing one pound
  • Quarter cup of rolled oats
  • One beaten egg
  • Minced garlic clove
  • Half teaspoon allspice
  • Half teaspoon ground ginger
  • Half teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Half teaspoon salt
  • Eighth teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Two tablespoons of butter
  • For the sauce:
  • One tablespoon of butter
  • One tablespoon of all-purpose flour
  • One teaspoon of all-purpose flour
  • One cup of water
  • One teaspoon of beef base (like Better Than BouillonĀ®)
  • Half teaspoon steak sauce
  • Half cup plain Greek yogurt

Step 1

Combine ground beef, oats, an egg, minced garlic, allspice, ginger, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper in a medium-sized bowl. Get your hands in there and mix it all up until the ingredients are evenly blended, which should take around a minute. Shape the meat mixture into small balls, using about 2 tablespoons for each one; aim to make around 17 meatballs.

Step 2

Next, heat up a large skillet over medium-high heat. Melt a couple of tablespoons of butter in the skillet. Once the butter is sizzling, add the meatballs and let them brown for 4 to 6 minutes. Lower the heat to medium, flip the meatballs over, and cook for another 3 minutes. After that, move the meatballs to a slow cooker, making sure to keep the flavorful grease in the skillet.

Step 3

Return the skillet to the heat and add another tablespoon of butter and some flour. Whisk them together for about half a minute, then gradually pour in some water, beef base, and steak sauce, scraping up all those tasty browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Let the mixture come to a boil, stirring constantly until it thickens, which should take roughly a minute. Pour this delicious sauce over the meatballs in the slow cooker.

Step 4

Cover the slow cooker and let everything cook on High for 2 hours or on Low for 4 to 5 hours. As the cooking time nears its end, take out a quarter cup of liquid from the slow cooker and transfer it to a separate bowl. Slowly mix in some yogurt to prevent it from curdling. Once the yogurt is tempered, stir it back into the slow cooker. Taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt and pepper, if needed. Enjoy your flavorful homemade meatballs!

Extra Tips & Suggestions

  1. 1. Keep your ingredients organized and easily accessible by using clear containers or labeled jars.
  2. 2. Utilize the space in your fridge efficiently by storing perishable items like cream and butter on the top shelf where it is coldest.
  3. 3. For a touch of elegance, try storing fresh herbs in a mason jar filled with water, creating a beautiful and functional display on your kitchen counter.
